Residency education and training is a time of incredible personal and professional growth. At the Tuscaloosa Family Medicine Residency, we believe this time should also be rewarding, supportive and full of connection. We understand that thriving as a new physician means nurturing your own well-being and we believe great physicians thrive when their well-being is prioritized. Our culture was created to help residents grow, connect and feel at home while doing meaningful work for patients and the community.
Tight-knit Family
Our residents are more than just colleagues — they are family. Here, you will find a community that celebrates your wins, supports you through challenges and makes every day more enjoyable.
- Monthly social events that include trivia nights, cookouts and dinner clubs.
- Annual retreats that provide time to relax, recharge and reconnect with fellow residents and faculty.
- Game day tailgates and concerts in a spirited college town.
- Resident-led activities, such as yoga, hiking, mindfulness and fitness challenges.
Wellness Woven into Training
We don’t just talk about wellness – we live it. Our program integrates wellness into the fabric of residency life through:
- Protected time for self-care and mental health.
- A Resident Wellness Committee that plans events, provides resources and advocates for work-life balance.
- Access to counseling and wellness resources.
- A culture that encourages balance, personal growth and self-compassion.
Mentor-Mentee Program
The Mentor-Mentee Program was developed by our Resident Wellness Committee and initially led by two resident graduates who wanted to make the adjustment to residency easier for their peers. The mission of the program, now in its fifth year, is to foster meaningful, supportive and professional relationships that promote personal growth, career development and lifelong learning. Through structured guidance, open communication and mutual respect, the program aims to empower residents to thrive in their roles, strengthen the culture of mentorship within the residency, and uphold the values of compassionate, community-centered family medicine.
- Prior to orientation, new interns are paired with an upper-level resident mentor.
- The mentor and mentee work together to create an Individual Development Plan (IDP) to track progress and celebrate milestones.
- Quarterly check-ins focus on transitioning into residency, wellness, professional development and clinical efficiency, building confidence and strengthening independence, work-life balance, leadership, preparing for PGY-2, mentoring others and long-term career planning.
- Quick access to coaching and support.
