We believe that clinical excellence goes hand-in-hand with leadership, inquiry and innovation, so our residents are immersed in quality improvement and scholarly activity throughout their training. In addition to quality improvement, residents are encouraged to pursue individual scholarly interests, whether in clinical research, community health, medical education or advocacy. Our faculty provide mentorship and support every step of the way, helping residents turn their passions into impactful research and scholarly contributions to the field of family medicine.
Overview
Residents are required to participate in scholarly and research activities during residency and to complete one of the three types of projects below:
- IRB approved project
- Quality improvement
- Designing enduring curriculum
- Other activities approved by the residency’s research director
Residents must accumulate 15 scholarly activity points to fulfill graduation requirements. The research director, residency director and a faculty mentor determine the specific number of points awarded for each project. For collaborative projects, full points may be awarded to each resident, or points can be distributed based on the level of contribution of each resident.
Other Scholarly Requirements
Quality Improvement
Quality improvement (QI) is an increasing part of private practice through insurance-based pay-for-performance programs and annual American Board of Family Medicine Maintenance of Certification (MOC) QI Chart Reviews.
All residents must participate in a QI project:
- This is usually completed during PGY-2 and is a graduation requirement.
- The goal of this requirement is to identify an improvement opportunity or performance gap, implement a change in care delivery and assess the impact of that change.
- The results of these projects must be submitted to the American Board of Family Medicine for approval of MOC points during PGY-2.
- All residents must complete both a hypertension and a diabetes PI/QI project.
Journal Club
All residents must read and create a PowerPoint presentation summarizing a scientific journal article during their PGY-2 year. Journal articles must be approved by the research director and distributed to the class at least two weeks prior to the presentation.
