The University of Alabama Sports Medicine Fellowship Program is a one year, ACGME-accredited program with intensive instruction that offers education, training and certification in state-of-the art sports medicine care. The program works with UA Athletic Department coaches, trainers and athletes, local high school athletic programs and community recreational athletes. Fellows also care for patients at the Dr. Bill deShazo Sports Medicine Center, housed within University Medical Center, which is operated by the UA College of Community Health Sciences. Established in 2009, nearly two dozen fellows have received training through the fellowship by core college faculty who are board-certified family physicians and fellowship trained in sports medicine. Fellows are actively involved in teaching family medicine residents, medical students, athletic training students and learners from other programs. The program has a 100% passage rate for fellows upon completion of their training.
