Get to know Tuscaloosa

Located on the banks of the Black Warrior River in central Alabama, Tuscaloosa (county pop. 172,000) has been recognized in Money Magazine as a “best place to live.”  Activities featured daily in The Tuscaloosa News abound with sporting events at The University of Alabama and seasonal events like Dickens Downtown and The Kentuck Arts Festival. The community is culturally enriched by the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra featuring noted musicians.  The University of Alabama’s music department offers a rich variety of musical offerings through its Celebrity Series. Moderate temperatures (summer highs 91 degrees; winter lows 35 degrees) afford outdoor enthusiasts many opportunities for fishing and boating on Lake Tuscaloosa.  Surrounding areas of Tuscaloosa are a hunter’s haven.  Tuscaloosa is also home to the largest private collection of American art in the United States at the Westervelt Warner Museum of American Art. The Surrounding Area

Tuscaloosa is conveniently located to many popular tourist attractions.  Birmingham with its Alabama Symphony is only 45 minutes away and Montgomery, featuring the nationally famous Shakespeare Festival, is only a 95 minute drive.  Downtown Atlanta can be reached in an easy 3 1/2 hours.  The Florida and Alabama Gulf coasts feature some of the whitest beaches in the world and are a half day’s drive, making for a great weekend getaway.

The University of Alabama

Founded as the state’s flagship university in 1831, The University of Alabama has an enrollment of approximatley 28,000 students.  U.S. News and World Report ranks The University in the top 50 public universities.  In addition to its nationally known sports programs, the U of A offers bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees in more than 200 fields of study.  Its beautiful campus contrasts architecturally stately antebellum buildings with the newly renovated Bryant-Denny Stadium where 93,000 fans cheer the Crimson Tide.  The University Medical Center is conveniently located on campus within walking distance of DCH Regional Medical Center.
