Program Overview

The Family Medicine Residency in Tuscaloosa prepares physicians to provide excellent care in family medicine.  The curriculum is designed to lead to board certification in family medicine and competence in patient care, and to prepare physicians to assume responsible positions in their communities.

Offering a broad-based curriculum, the program nevertheless has a clear focus: to develop family practitioners committed to providing comprehensive, competent, and compassionate care for the medical problems of patients of all ages.  Through a combination of clinical assignments and academic instruction, the program teaches the need for medical care to address the person who has the illness and not just the person’s illness.

The program is conducted by the Department of Family Medicine of the University of Alabama School of Medicine’s College of Community Health Sciences (link to CCHS home page).  Although administered by the University, the program emphasizes community-based continuity of care.

  • enhance residents’ skills in the practice of medicine;
  • provide several models for the practice of family medicine
  • and promote the development of management skills;
